Ara has extensive experience advising clients in the telecoms, broadcasting and media sectors on a range of strategic corporate, commercial and regulatory projects.

Ara has been involved in some of the most high profile transactions in the telecoms space in Australia, the Asia-Pacific and Middle East. This includes projects on IoT / smart cities, super-fast broadband, structural separation, undersea cable systems, MVNOs, network sharing and interconnection, as well as competition law and regulatory clearance matters.

Ara’s practice currently has a strong focus on strategic transactions involving the development and implementation of IoT initiatives, including large scale smart city projects.

He also has extensive experience with corporate and commercial transactions to construct super-fast broadband networks and the design and implementation of regulatory models for wholesale access to these networks. This includes the development of wholesale contracting arrangements for duct, dark fibre and bitstream access in a number of countries.

Ara also frequently acts for online, broadcasting and media companies on commercial, competition and regulatory matters.

Some of Ara’s recent experience includes advising:

  • NBN Co, the entity building the National Broadband Network in Australia, on the development of its Special Access Undertaking, Wholesale Broadband Agreement and regulatory aspects of its A$9 billion transaction with Telstra
  • SingTel, the leading telco in Singapore, on the rollout of the passive infrastructure of Singapore’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (NGNBN) and implementation of structural separation in relation to the passive layer of the NGNBN
  • Commercial Radio Australia, the peak industry body for the commercial radio sector in Australia, on the launch and expansion of digital radio broadcast services in Australia
  • Foxtel, the leading pay TV provider in Australia, on its launch of triple play services in Australia, including its wholesale transaction with Telstra for voice and broadband services and assisting its retail business on the launch of triple play services
  • du, a leading telco in the UAE, on its strategic public private partnership with the Smart Dubai Office to develop and implement the Smart City Platform for the city of Dubai
  • SubPartners, a Superloop company, on the construction of the INDIGO cable system, a new high capacity undersea cable  connecting Singapore, Indonesia and Australia
  • Ooredoo, the leading telco in Qatar, on a range of corporate, commercial and regulatory projects.

Ara is recognised as a leading practitioner in International Who’s Who 2017 (TMT), Chambers Asia-Pacific 2017 and Best Lawyers 2017 (Telecommunications Law and Regulatory Practice).

Ara joined Webb Henderson in September 2009 and became a partner in April 2010. Prior to joining Webb Henderson, Ara practiced in the Competition and Regulation Group at Gilbert + Tobin.
